Review of Leica Ultravid HD used on the

hunt for the Wounded Warrior Project

While on the Wounded Warrior hunt we used the new Leica Ultravid HD Binoculars, and we were immediately struck with how bright and clear the image was from the center of the generous field of view to the outer edges, and how true the colors were.

They have a magnesium housing and a titanium central hinge shaft, making these binoculars strong and rugged as well as lightweight.

Features of Leica Ultravid HD Binoculars that we liked:

  • Excellent image quality - even in poor light conditions
  • Fluoride lenses
  • Leica AquaDura - a "hydrophobic coating" which with its water and dirt repelling properties, ensures clear visibility even in poor weather conditions
  • Increased light transmission
  • Consistently smooth focusing - whatever the temperature

Review of Leica Ultravid HD used by Jeff & Jim

I always thought all binoculars were created equal…that was until I used the Leica’s on my first hunt in Africa. I borrowed a pair of Leicas from Nhoro Safaris to use while hunting my kudu. The Leicas helped me harvest my dream animal by giving us the advantage of being able to quickly identify the right bull, enabling us to put on a good stalk which ended with me making a perfect shot on this great animal.

I’ll be sure to get a pair of Leicas for my next African trip. Thank you, Leica, for opening my eyes to a whole new world.

Review by Allen Richardson of Leica 10x25 compacts

While on a recent hunt with Nhoro Safaris in 2009 i was lucky enough to be loaned a pair of Leica's Ultravid HD 10x40 binoculars. I found them far superior than my personal pair. After returning to the United States i purchased a pair of Leica's 10x25 compacts which i used on a recent lion hunt with Nhoro Safaris. I was impressed by how clear and bright they were even in darker conditions. What i like the most is how light they are, and the feel of the leather finish is great. Once you have held a pair of these in your hands you wont want to hold anything else.

At first I was a little apprehensive about the Leica binoculars. They are costly and I thought that because of that, they would naturally appeal to a market segment that would not use them in a harsh or demanding environment and would therefore be designed and constructed accordingly. I was to be proven wrong on all accounts.

The first thing that I noticed when using the binoculars was the clarity. As a professional hunter, this is extremely important when it comes to identifying and judging animal trophies at long range. If this can be done effectively, time can be saved on a hunt by avoiding unnecessary stalks on animals that are not up to standard. This I saw demonstrated on a recent hunt where I could identify the fact that a gemsbok only had one horn at a distance of over 1000yds!

The robustness of the binoculars was also demonstrated to me while I had to pursue a wounded giraffe through very thick savannah bush. A great deal of the pursuit was at a running pace, during which the binoculars were taking a beating from the unforgiving thorny bush. The only “damage” that resulted was very minor scratches at the hinge of the unit. This says a lot for the rubber cladding that is standard on all Leica binoculars.

On the same hunt mentioned above, we were caught in a major downpour while out hunting. Within minutes everything was drenched. The downpour continued for over half an hour as we made our way back to the vehicle. During this storm, I paid little attention to the Leica binoculars that were hanging on my side. After reaching camp, I checked the binoculars, only to find that despite the fact that I still had to dry off water, they still functioned 100% correctly.

I was very impressed with the Leicas. In our industry, as a professional hunter, we place high demands on our equipment and I can confidently say that the Leica Binoculars will do the job and more, no matter what is thrown at them.
